Concept

In this case, producing “moving images” meant artistically reacting to Ivana Sajko’s text Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose.

In my view, the emotional, ethical and even political nature of the text (which I felt I found), as well as the nature of the project itself impeded me from utilising the usual aesthetics/language of my line of work. Therefore, I reached for the “meaning-carrying” material, whose texture and nature remained sufficiently melancholic and fragile (thus stronger perhaps?), especially nowadays – for the Super 8.

I tried to keep the structure/design of the visuals as moderate and scanty as possible. It seemed to me that any kind of deliberate or calculated aestheticising would in this case be a hypocritical and incorrect procedure.

Therefore, two three-minute clips were made digitally and finalised on a Super 8 film. During the show, this material is screened from a Super 8 film projector onto the screen in the background.

The first case is found footage – I used documentary materials from the Spanish Civil War, student riots in Paris in 1968 and American comedies from the Depression period.

The second one features only the basic, “aesthetically non-pleasing” and, in terms of direction, distanced 3D computer animation, linearly showing the course of events related to the plot of the text/project.

The Super 8 camera was lent by Milan Bukovac, the cinematographer was Branko Linta, and the film was developed by Josip Šćurec from Klubvizija. Without their assistance my part of work would be absolutely impossible, therefore I thank them deeply.

My thanks also goes to the entire team involved in this project – I was lucky to be one of them.
