Porvenir awarded at Liburnia Film Festival

Porvenir 5
Renowned author of experimental films and visual artist Renata Poljak’s latest film has won as many as three awards at the 18th edition of Liburnia Film Festival, held in Opatija, Aug 24 – 28.

Porvenir has won awards for Best Film, Best Cinematographer (Boris Poljak) and Best Sound Design (Iva Ivan). “Aided by monumental cinematography, consistent editing and delicate sound design, the director metaphorically as well as physically recreates her great-grandfather’s journey, sending us a remarkable audio-visual postcard from the end of the world imbued with hope for new beginnings,” said the explanation of the Liburnia Film Festival jury, consisting of producer Miljenka Čogelja, cinematographer and photographer Hrvoje Franjić, film director Andrej Korovljev, artistic director of Underhill Fest and TV editor Vuk Perović and film critic and independent curator Dina Pokrajac.

Renata Poljak’s Porvenir is a film inspired by generations of people who, like the author’s great-grandfather, driven by ward and hunger voyaged by sea in search of a better future. ‘Porvenir’ means ‘future’ in Spanish, and it is also the name of the town founded by Croatian immigrants at the beginning of 20th century in Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of Chile. Porvenir premiered at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in May of this year, went on to screen at the Mediterranean Film Festival Split in July and Films Like No Others, an art film review in Bol on the island of Brač, after which it is scheduled to screen at the 25 FPS – Festival of Experimental Film held in Zagreb in September.
