Three films in Grand Competition of Animafest Zagreb

Animafest zagreb 2025 laurels official selection black

We are excited to share the happy news that 3 films from Bonobostudio distribution or/and production roster will be screened in the Grand Competition of Animafest Zagreb 2025 (2-7 June 2025):

No Room by Jelena Oroz / Bonobostudio, Croatia, 2024

How by Marko Meštrović / Kreativni sindikat, Croatia, 2025

Fačuk by Maida Srabović / TETRABOT, Croatia, Slovenia, 2025

No Room by Jelena Oroz is a revenge movie where cars have legs and perhaps that is why they feel free to use the pavement as they please — to the despair of all pedestrians. The winner of ASIFA Croatia Award for Best Croatian Professional Film in 2024 is no stranger to the festival circuit. It premiered at the Fantoche International Animation Film Festival, going on to screen at more than 20 world festivals, with more to come. Prior to No Room, Jelena made several films with Bonobostudio as producer and distributor: Letters From the Edge of the Forest (2022), Two for Two (2018) and Fakofbolan: Forever or Never? (2013, music video).

How by Marko Meštrović (script, directing, drawing, animation and editing) is a drawing-on-paper film, with surreal scenes and thrilling paradoxes opening between reality and subtle poetic forms that reveal endless loops of existence. Marko Meštrović has been making animated films since 2000. His films have screened at some of the most important world film festivals (Locarno, Annecy, Clermont-Ferrand, Ottawa, Edinburgh, Sarajevo), receiving many awards. The screening in the Grand Competition of Animafest Zagreb will be the world premiere of the film.

Inspired by the artworks of Mijo Kovačić, a Croatian painter and Naïve artist, Fačuk by Maida Srabović takes place in a God-fearing village nestled between two rivers, where giving birth to a so-called fačuk (an illegitimate child) is a mortal sin. Everyone in the village recoils from the young pregnant woman who is about to give birth. In this narrow-minded and harsh rural environment, fear grows inside her. This is the first film which Maida Srabović (1986, Koprivnica) wrote, directed, and produced. The screening at Animafest will mark its world premiere.

We are looking forward to the screenings and the whole Animafest Zagreb program!
