Travelling Country and Nighthawk awarded at festivals in Bugaria and Spain. more
Sonámbulo might be a "small" film – it is only 4 minutes and 20 seconds long – but it is a fantastic film, and it most definitely deserved a place with great animated shorts of our time. The film is inspired by Federico García Lorca’s poem Romance Sonámbulo and surrealist paintings, very recognisable in the film’s visual style. A catchy tune was composed by a Bulgarian author Nikola Gruev - Kottarashky, and the film was produced by a Canadian company Unité centrale. Well, go see for yourself on Vimeo and tell us what you think!
But if you want to know more, we have compiled few interesting information about the film:
· Sonámbulo premiered in the international competition at HAFF in Utrecht (18. 3. – 22. 3. 2015)
· In less than two years, the film competed at 103 festivals (2015/2016): Toronto, Annecy, MIAF, IndieLisboa, Edinburgh, Vila do Conde, Anima Mundi, Sao Paulo, Encounters, Uppsala, Bucheon, DOK Leipzig, LIAF, Animateka, Ann Arbor, Stuttgart etc.
· It won 11 awards and mentions: at Animafest, Fest Anča, Animator, OIAF, Longue vue sur le court, Sommets du cinema d'animation, Cinanima Espinho, Etiuda & Anima, Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois, Multivision and Hiroshima
· The film was nominated for Canadian Screen Awards and Prix Jutra
· It was screened at 15 special screenings: in the Museum of modern art in Lille, where it was screened next to Miró's paintings, in Kloosterkino, Nijmegen or Balkanima, in the Bonobostudio compilation program
· It was screened at Arte France and Canal+ Spain
· It was featured on the lists of the best films of 2015 in a magazine 24 images.
If you want to hear what the talented and very productive author and artist Theodore Ushev has to say about the film, have a look at this great interview made by Vassilis Kroustallis for Zippy Frames or read a conversation for Canadian La Presse (in French). And if research is your game, read about Ushev's new film, Blind Vaysha (NFB), winning its way through the festival circuit for the past year, with a possible Oscar nomination coming up. (Fingers crossed!)
So, to conclude, great news for all: Theodore Ushev's Sonámbulo is from now on available for free on Vimeo!
